Spread betting is a trading technique whereby you get exposure to a financial instrument without physically owning that underlying instrument. Therefore you do not even have to pay stamp duty on your transactions as you never actually have ownership of the equity. Given that the current stamp duty tariff is 0.5% of the value of the trade, financial spread betting represents a substantial saving compared to dealing with a regular stockbroker.
